Is it the photographer or the camera that produces our images?
And connected to this question we also ask, Is the photographer an artist?
Definition of Photography by Wikipedia
Photography is the art, application, and practice of creating durable images by recording light, either electronically by means of an image sensor, or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film. It is employed in many fields of science, manufacturing, and business, as well as its more direct uses for art, film and video production, recreational purposes, hobby, and mass communication.
Obviously, are camera and lens being the tool that we use to produce the images. But do these tools work the same in everyone’s hands? Technically the camera and lens should work the same in anyone’s hands, but do the images look the same.

Do we get the same results with the tools in different hands?
My dad was a child prodigy in music. He was a brilliant musician playing the Saxophone, Clarinet, and Flute. Yes, he had excellent instruments which were the tools of his trade. Growing up I played Saxophone and Clarinet as well. I was lucky enough to have very good instruments, but I did not have the talent to get the same results as my dad.

My uncle Hy was an extraordinary photographer, and it was magic to see him pick up any of his 100's of cameras and lenses. Hy was also gifted in the darkroom. He developed all his images in in his home darkroom. He had freezers full of all type of film and knew what each would do in a camera and the darkroom. This was a talent he had without the aid of photoshop or lightroom.
His natural light portraits were amazing both in colour and black & white, and during his career in photography he studied with expert photographers and was chosen to take portraits of many American Presidents.

Like my Uncle Hy, I learned photography using a film camera with manual focus, but I was not very good in the darkroom as the chemicals affect me and I could not spend extended periods in the darkroom. I only used SLR with 35mm film lighter weight equipment for street photography, landscape, photography, and location portraits.
My uncle had superior photography knowledge and was able to pick up my equipment and get amazing images, while I was lost using some of his equipment.
Synopsis:
With these two examples, I have believe that we need quality equipment to create photography images, but the equipment does not guarantee success unless the photographer knows how to use the equipment and has the aptitude for photography.
I found this brief article discussing if the photographer or the camera are the real artist?
I was able to find this article with both sides of the Photography debate:

Digital has changed the photography landscape:

Today we also have photoshop, lightroom, and a whole host of other photo retouching software. Our cameras have so many options for taking a photo. Let us not forget that cellphone cameras have improved dramatically in the last 10 years.
I found this recent article about why cellphone cameras stick out:
I personally try to keep things simple; Our digital camera is a computer and like any computer we need to learn how to use it. The better we understand our digital camera, the better our results will be. The owner’s manual is a great place to start, also check out online resources. Remember, like anything else in life it takes practice to take quality images.
Please don't get frustrated by all the functions on your new digital camera. not every bell and whistle is for everyone.
Below is an article explaining the different modes on a DSLR or Mirrorless Camera:

Conclusion:
Is it the photographer or the camera that produces our images?
The camera is the instrument that produces the image, but without the photographer the camera is just a paperweight. Photography before the digital revolution was science based with film development and chemicals. Now photography is technology based with even entry level cameras having amazing innovation.
And connected to this question we also ask, Is the photographer an artist?
The old saying is art is in the eye of the beholder! And artist is someone that uses their mind and hands to create their version of beauty. A musician uses his/her instrument, a painter uses the brush and paints, a dancer uses their body, and a singer uses their voice.
Photography creates stories and emotions, it could a picture of your pet, a family member, a skyline, a world event, or a landscape. I believe photography is an artform because it evokes memories, and emotions every time you look at a particular photo.
