  • The price of cameras have gone up

  • Their is a shortage of camera models from every manufacturer

  • The raw materials used to produce cameras are backordered and in short supple

  • Their is a big drop in camera sales

  • A shift to smart phones and mirrorless cameras

I found this article by Hannah Rooke explaining some of the obstacles happening right now in the photography industry:

Check out this great video from LensVid explaining the drop in camera sales and the increase in prices:

One of the major reasons for the drop in compact cameras sales is the quality of smart phone cameras. Why carry a compact camera when your phone can take excellent vacation, family, and pet photos for the average consumer. Not to mention the ever present selfie. Camera shipments had fallen from 120 million units in 2010 to just 9 million units in 2020. But the drop mostly reflects the death of compact cameras

The global chip shortage continues to not only delay camera production but raise the price for every level of cameras. If you plan to upgrade your gear it definitely will be more expensive and harder to find. Many photographers are turning to used equipment. Note that this is not just a photography issue, the shortages and supple chain issues are tech wide.

This is a great video from OrmsTV about the do's and don't of buying used camera equipment:

Check out this article by Lauren Scott about the advantages of buying used photography equipment:

Since the beginning of Covid in 2020, the photography industry took a hit as it is connected to the global economy. Less weddings, graduations, and other events took a huge chunk of money out of the pockets of professional photographers. Without this steady work there was no need to upgrade or add to their photography equipment.

For the photography hobbyist, the sudden change of lifestyle and income sources reflexed in their buying habits and disposal income. Why spend money on photography equipment when you are stuck inside binge watching Netflix and ordering Uber Eats. Besides how many pictures do you need of your dog/cat sitting on the couch watching tv with you.

Since 2020, Mirrorless Camera sales have increase while DSLR sales have declined. Mirrorless cameras have the advantage of usually being lighter, more compact, faster, and better for video; and their lenses and accessories are growing. increasing fast.

On January 4, 2022, Canon announced that it will design no new DSLRs. Its EOS-1D X Mark III will be its last pro model; the future is mirrorless. "Today, mirrorless cameras are taking over in terms of features and sensor quality".

In 2021, Sony quietly moved away from DSLR cameras and put their time and money into mirrorless cameras. Not surprising since Sony's last DS:R was the a99 II, and introduced in 2016.

The decline in camera sales led to a decline in lens sales and in just 10 years, camera sales wan In reality, the future of photography’s growth and expansion lies in mobile, and mirrorless cameras.

What does this mean for the industry? Prices will continue to stay high; manufacturers will have less money to spend on R&D. The companies struggling to survive even before the pandemic might not survive such as Olympus

Water has always been something I have been drawn to from an early age. In fact, from about 7 years old onward, I spent my summers swimming either at the "Y" or the neighbourhood pool. It was always a treat to go up to Northern Ontario and spend hours sitting on the beach and watching the waves as mother nature decided if they would be calm or violent.

About twenty years ago, I was lucky enough to visit Banff, Lake Louise & Jasper. The view was incredible and swimming in Radium Hot Springs in Northern BC was refreshing. Being near water brings a calmness to my soul, so photographing water was a natural extension. It has allowed me to help release the daily stress of living through Covid.

In the winter, I enjoyed nothing more then going ice skating with my buddies on the outdoor rink, but first we had to shovel the layer of snow off it. To this day I love the sound of a skate blade cutting through the ice and the smell of the ice when I fall on my butt.
