It's Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival, when Asian communities around the world will say farewell to the Year of the Tiger and usher in the Year of the Rabbit. Traditionally the celebration is marked by family reunions, parades and fireworks.
The Chinese calendar operates on a 12-year cycle, with each year linked to one of a dozen animals: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. The lunar calendar is also based on the five elements of Taoism: fire, earth, water, wood and metal. So, 2022 was technically the Year of the Water Tiger, and 2023 is the Year of the Water Rabbit. People born in Water years are said to be creative, sensitive and reflective.
Across Asia, red and gold symbolize good fortune. Many people wear red during Lunar New Year, and children often receive red envelopes stuffed with money. Families will hold feasts, clean their homes and visit shrines to honor deceased relatives.
Recently I was thinking about the fact that their are places around the world that do not let you take photos. This really was surprising to me with the power of social media, and the amount of photos out in the world. Some places it is even a criminal act to take a photo.
I found this great article by Beth Nicholls of Digital Camera World " 6 tourist destinations around the world where you CAN'T take photos."
