Is it important?
So, we bought the latest and greatest camera, flash, lenses, and tripod. Why are our photos just ok?
The answer could be that we do not understand how to use light.
In my experience a photographer does not have to have the most expensive camera, lens, and tripod. Spending money on every photography toy will not make us better photographers. Understanding how the camera and lens we works have is a good start. Spend your time taking pictures and seeing the results. Do not worry if you make mistakes, we learn from our mistakes.
The benefit of digital photography is we do not have to spend money on film and developing to learn how to take photos. Trust me, when I started learning photography as a youngster, I spend all my disposable income on film and developing. At the beginning of your photography journey, it is trial and error.
A friend of mine bought a used DSLR with two lenses about 2 years ago. At first, he found that it took about 100 pictures to get one he liked. As he practiced, he like more of the pictures he shot. Recently, he said to me that is starting to understand how lighting works in photography.
Understanding lighting and light sources is one of the biggest challenges in photography.. I found this easy to understand article on lighting by Showket.com
