October is a great month to take pictures and create new memories. In the USA we have Columbus Day – Monday, October 14, 2024 and in Canada we have Thanksgiving also on Monday, October 14, 2024.

This is a great time to take out your camera while enjoying the family festivities...

Digital Camera Sales World-Wide:

Since I was a young child a camera was an extra appendage to my body, much like my uncle who took his camera everywhere with him. We were both film photographers back then. Then I got into digital photography and of course have a smartphone camera.

With the improvement in smartphone cameras a vast majority of people are using them instead of digital cameras. Many have become as good or better than most mass-market point-and-shoot cameras, leaving the general public to only use their smartphone camera as their main photography tool.

In a chart of 1,000 to 10,000 respondents aged 18-64 years old, surveyed in 2018 / 2019 and 2023 / 2024 in the United States, digital camera ownership fell from almost 60% of people to just over 30%.

While In the UK, the same figure fell from over 60% to just under 40%.

The Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) says that more cameras were shipped between January and May 2024 than during the same periods in 2022, and 2023. While we're unlikely to hit the highs of the 2010s again, digital cameras probably aren't quite the dying breed. This resurgence is lead by mirrorless and compact cameras. The interchangeable lens camera (ILC) sales grew by 28.6% compared to 2023 and the fixed-lens camera sales surged by 34.7%. The DSLR cameras have continued to decline, with mirrorless cameras now making up 83.75% of ILC shipments.

Halloween:

Of course their is no better time to bring out the camera than on Halloween. Costumes , candy, and photos! This year we celebrate on Thursday October 31, 2024.

Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31st, and the tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.
